The Prosciutto Intero di Maiale Nero d’Abruzzo is one of the most famous cuts of pork, the hind leg of the pig traditionally presented entirely on the bone. The ham is aged for at least one year.

Black pigs and knowledge of their existence date back two thousand years. Having been brought to Italy by the Romans during their conquests in Asia, black pigs became the norm in oak woods and a typical support for families who raised them for personal consumption.

Over the years distinct and separate bloodlines have been established with these different physical traits. Of the few pure breeds left, each has been identified with a distinct and unique DNA. The Nero d’Abruzzo, after DNA analysis, was recognized as a unique and indigenous breed in comparison to that of the black pig of Calabria and also the Sardinian one.

Nero d’Abruzzo had almost disappeared; thanks to the efforts of some Abruzzo breeders, it was possible to escape the danger of extinction. Thanks to these people, we have the opportunity to embrace and carry on this way of breeding such an ancient breed and to share with everyone its value which remains not only in the flavor but also in the healthy qualities of the meat.
